Implant Restoration Q&A

What is implant restoration?

Implant restoration is a restorative dentistry subspecialty that completes the dental implant placement process.

Dental implants are small metal posts that a surgeon inserts into the sockets where your permanent teeth used to be. At Double Diamond Dental, the team doesn’t place dental implants themselves. Instead, they coordinate implant placement with nearby implant specialists and oral surgeons.

After you get dental implants and they finish fusing with your jaw, you return to Double Diamond Dental and the implant restoration process begins.

What are the benefits of implant restoration?

If you’re missing some or all of your permanent teeth, implant restoration offers various benefits, including:

  • Confidence
  • Convenience
  • Durability
  • Improved biting and chewing
  • Clearer speech

Implant restoration can even improve your oral health. By replacing extracted or missing teeth with implants, you reduce the risk of gum recession, bone decay, and other potential problems.

What are the types of implant restorations?

At Double Diamond Dental, the team offers several types of implant restorations, including:

Porcelain crowns

A crown is an artificial tooth made from porcelain. Your Double Diamond Dental provider attaches the crowns to the top of your dental implants by screwing them in place. After placing the crowns, you can bite and chew right away.

Typically, the team recommends crowns for people who are only missing a few permanent teeth.

Implant-anchored dentures

If you’re missing all of the teeth on your upper or lower dental arch, the team recommends implant-anchored dentures.

When you’re finished recovering from implant-placement surgery, you visit Double Diamond Dental. The team takes impressions of your mouth and sends them to a denture lab. The denture lab creates a set of custom implant dentures (one for your upper arch and one for your lower arch).

When your dentures are ready, several weeks later, you return to the office. The team attaches your dentures to your implants, checks your bite, and explains how to care for them.

How long do implant restorations last?

Implant restorations last 12-15 years* on average, but you can extend their use by practicing good oral hygiene. The team at Double Diamond Dental recommends brushing your teeth twice daily, flossing regularly, and visiting the office every six months for preventive teeth cleaning.
