Veneers Q&A

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin porcelain shells that the Double Diamond Dental team bonds to the surfaces of your permanent teeth. After the bonding material dries, the veneers function like your teeth, allowing you to bite and chew.

Some people only get one veneer, but it’s best to get between six and eight. That’s because an even number of veneers provides a more balanced and symmetrical smile.

What types of cosmetic problems can veneers treat?

At Double Diamond Dental, the team uses veneers to treat various cosmetic problems, including:

  • Broken, chipped, and cracked teeth
  • Severe discoloration or uneven coloring
  • Smaller-than-average teeth
  • Pointy teeth
  • Spaces between the teeth

You might also benefit from veneers if you have unusually shaped teeth.

What does getting veneers involve?

At Double Diamond Dental, getting veneers takes two visits about a week apart.

The team reviews your dental records, completes an oral exam, and takes a series of X-rays to check the health of your teeth and gums. If you don’t have tooth decay or cavities, the team moves forward with treatment.

Your provider administers a local anesthetic and uses handheld tools to remove a thin layer of enamel from each tooth getting a veneer. After preparing your teeth, your provider takes a series of impressions. Then, they apply temporary veneers to protect your teeth.

The team sends your impressions to a dental lab that creates a custom set of permanent veneers. You return to Double Diamond Dental a week later, when your permanent veneers are ready.

The team numbs your mouth with an anesthetic and replaces your temporary veneers with permanent ones. Then, they trim off any excess material, check your bite, and provide care instructions.

How long do porcelain veneers last?

Porcelain veneers last between 10-12 years* on average, but it’s possible to extend their use. The team at Double Diamond Dental recommends practicing good oral hygiene, including brushing twice daily, flossing regularly, and visiting the office every six months for preventive teeth cleaning.

To prevent damage to your veneers, avoid bad habits like nail-biting and opening packaging with your teeth. If you play contact sports, the team also recommends wearing a mouthguard.
